Undergraduate Degrees
Bachelor of Music Performance
- One movement from any of the Six Cello Suites by J.S. Bach
- One movement of a standard concerto
- One additional piece of choice or another contrasting movement of a Bach Cello Suite. An etude is also accepted in this category.
It is highly recommended that one selection be performed from memory.
Bachelor of Music Education
- One movement from any of the Six Cello Suites by J.S. Bach
- One movement of a standard concerto or sonata
It is highly recommended that one selection be performed from memory.
Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy
- Two contrasting movements from the standard viola literature
Graduate Degrees
Master of Music
- Two contrasting movements from any of the Six Cello Suites of JS Bach (at least one movement memorized)
- Two standard orchestral excerpts (at least one must be a fast tempo excerpt)
- One movement from the standard viola concerto literature, i.e. Bartok, Walton, Hindemith, Schnittke, Penderecki, Rosza, Stamitz, or Hoffmeister. (Memorization highly encouraged but not required)
- One movement from a standard sonata or concert work from the 19th, 20th, or 21st century
Unaccompanied movements by Bach must be performed from memory. It is highly recommended that the concerto also be memorized.
Doctor of Musical Arts
- Two contrasting movements from any of the Six Cello Suites of JS Bach (both movements memorized)
- Two standard orchestral excerpts (at least one must be a fast tempo excerpt)
- One movement from the standard viola concerto literature, i.e. Bartok, Walton, Hindemith, Schnittke, Penderecki, Rosza, Stamitz, or Hoffmeister. (Memorized)
- One movement from a standard sonata or concert work from the 19th-20th century
- One work written within the last 40 years
Unaccompanied movements by Bach and the concerto must be performed from memory.
